November in Santa Monica for a filmmaker or film enthusiast means one thing - AFM!
Each year, the Loews Santa Monica Hotel is completely taken over and transformed into a filmmaker's dream where people come from all over the world to showcase their work and pick up films for distribution. There are panel discussions, workshops, meetings, and of course FILMS! The best part is, you don't need to be a pro or established in the industry to take advantage of this fabulous event.
Back in 2014 when I caught the filmmaker's bug, I decided to immerse myself in the industry by attending every event, film festival, conference, or networking opportunity I could. Since I live in Santa Monica, AFM was a given. I asked those I had connected with about how to approach AFM as a new filmmaker since I didn't have anything to sell or even promote at that time. The answer I got was - JUST GO! So that's precisely what I did. I didn't have a ticket or pass, but just decided to spend one afternoon in the lobby at Loews and see what I could learn. I'm the type of person who will strike up a conversation with anyone, so I was confident I'd be fine, and I was. It was an amazing experience to just take in the energy that is AFM. When I had this photo taken I was approached by some of the attendees asking if I were an actress. I replied, "No, I'm a writer", which of course was true. I met so many great people that first year, directors and producers and those who would become dear friends. It's all because I decided to JUST GO.
Next week I'll be attending my 5th AFM and super excited to see what this time brings as I now have three film projects of my own in various stages of production. As a filmmaker who LOVES learning, this event always makes me happy because I learn something new each time. Whether it's attending a panel discussion, or simply having a conversation with someone new in the lobby, AFM is the perfect opportunity for someone just entering the industry to start making connections.
