It was September of 2014 when my dream of becoming a filmmaker began. I was living in Los Angeles and had had success as a transformational author. I felt in order to grow as a writer, as an artist, I needed to pursue something new, and that was filmmaking. I decided to begin following the industry events and those in the industry who I admired. During a networking event earlier that year in Santa Monica, I came across a group of female filmmakers who were sharing their documentary with the group. It was entitled THE EMPOWERMENT PROJECT and was about ordinary women doing extraordinary things. I immediately felt inspired and began following their journey.
In September I attended the Lady Filmmakers Film Festival in Beverly Hills to support this group of women who were screening their film at the festival. I also decided to sit in on some of the panel discussions as I was eager to learn.
During my early days as a writer and then author, I decided to learn about the publishing industry by diving right in. I looked into networking groups and writers conferences and volunteered for every opportunity that presented itself. Volunteering for a writer’s conference is great. You not only support those at the conference, you get to learn in the process and meet a lot of great people. I decided to pursue the same path when it came to filmmaking. I was eager to learn and I knew if I did the leg work, I could find success as well. That path has paid off in spades over the last four years and I’ve learned so much along the way.
Sitting in the audience at that first festival watching this amazing film gave me such hope as to what I could accomplish on my own in the industry. I loved to write, but I also saw the stories in my head very visually, so it made sense to pursue this new medium. I began attending more and more events and connected with other industry professionals on social media. I began to grow my network and continued to learn about the industry and the different areas of filmmaking. I knew I wanted to write, but I also wanted to learn more about directing, producing, cinematography, the whole picture.
Today, I have published nine bestselling books, my latest entitled IT’S SIMPLY FILMMAKING. In continuing to pursue my passion for learning, I decided to interview a group of 28 amazing female filmmakers in several areas of film - Screenwriting, Producing, Directing, Cinematography, Composing and Editing. I learned so much and it was wonderful sharing their inspiring stories and words of wisdom with the world.
This blog is an extension of that work. I wanted to continue sharing the work of filmmakers I admire and pass along information I knew would be helpful for the aspiring and emerging female filmmaker. There is so much to learn and so many areas I plan to cover. I hope what I present will be beneficial to you, if this too is your dream.
I currently have about 20 different categories in which I will be sharing information, and more to come I’m sure. So please come along for the ride. Comment on the posts. Ask questions. I’m here to support you any way I can, and many thanks for your support.
